When is a European electronics manufacturer the right choice?

Choosing an EMS partner is always a combination of several factors. Price is among the most visible, but on its own, it does not reflect how much electronics manufacturing will actually cost you in the end.

For simpler and cheaper products manufactured in large series, non-European production may indeed be cheaper. However, for products with higher added value, other factors often come into play – logistics, production accessibility, or the level of control over the entire process. So, when does it make sense to choose a European EMS partner?

Why it is beneficial to see where your product is manufactured

You can verify a supplier through a remote audit and request all documentation and certificates. However, for more demanding projects, it is advisable to inspect the production environment in person.

Seeing the line, reviewing processes, or speaking with the people who will be introducing the product into production. This is precisely where a European electronics manufacturer has an advantage: they are physically accessible.

Example: CEMS is a Czech company headquartered in Brno. For our customers from Germany or Austria, a visit to the production plant or an audit before starting cooperation means only a one-day business trip.

Proximity to production is therefore not just a logistical advantage, but also builds much greater trust between partners.

Team communication is tested as early as NPI

An electronic product changes throughout its lifecycle.

Developers modify the design. A component is discontinued. During the first series, it turns out that a certain detail is not ideal for the production process. Or customer requirements change.

Successful cooperation therefore also depends on how quickly technical teams can communicate with each other.

You will notice this as early as the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase. Because both parties work in the same or nearly the same time zone with a European partner, it should not be a problem to find a suitable time for a technical DFM call or to meet in person directly at the production facility if needed.

Know-how protection is more secure in Europe

When outsourcing electronics, the manufacturer hands over a significant portion of their know-how to the EMS partner – from production documentation to sensitive firmware data.

A non-disclosure agreement is fundamental, but the legal environment in which the supplier operates, the ability to audit their processes, and the ability to verify who works with the data and how are also important.

Protecting one’s own know-how is precisely one of the reasons why some manufacturers are starting to bring part of their production back to Europe. With a European partner, any potential dispute or breach of trade secrets is resolved in a legal environment that is significantly closer and more predictable for the customer.

Cybersecurity also comes into play for IoT devices

For products with digital elements, it is no longer just about protecting production documentation.

During production, firmware, certificates, or cryptographic keys may be uploaded to the device. For such projects, the customer needs to know exactly who has access to sensitive data and how the work is carried out.
The importance of these processes is also growing due to European legislation, particularly the Cyber Resilience Act. Manufacturers of products with digital elements will have to address product cybersecurity much more systematically throughout its entire lifecycle.

Increasingly, it is not enough to know who you are buying from. You also need to know the origin of the material

At the same time, the geopolitical situation is changing the requirements of some manufacturers for the entire supply chain.

At CEMS, we have also encountered requirements to document the origin of materials. Sometimes it is more complex because you have to go deep into the supply chain. On the other hand, transparency is one of the indicators of a manufacturing partner’s credibility.

Summary: When is it beneficial to use an EMS partner from Europe?

If you have very high volumes, a stable product, and the lowest possible unit price is decisive for you, Asian production can be a very good choice.

A Central European EMS partner becomes more attractive primarily where, in addition to price, you also need:

  • to communicate quickly with the technical team,
  • to respond flexibly to product changes,
  • to personally audit the production process,
  • to better protect your own know-how,
  • to have control over the work with firmware and the product’s digital identity,
  • to document the origin of the material,
  • to have greater control over the supply chain,
  • to reduce the impact of long-distance transport.

The higher the added value of the electronics and the greater the problem its failure would cause, the less the assembly price alone says about the actual cost of the cooperation.

Therefore, European production is not automatically a cheaper or better choice for every project.

However, for products where flexibility, know-how, speed of change, and long-term control over production matter, the shortest path between the developer and the production line may ultimately be the most advantageous.
